I'm very proud of The WORKS.

As many of you already know, I serve at The WORKS gourmet burger bistro, and have for almost three years now. Even though I only work two days a week while I'm in school, I still keep up with the company and recent news.

Last Wednesday, The WORKs' recent store opened in Halifax, the first to open outside of Ontario, was abruptly closed. I didn't know about the closing until one of my friends from Halifax texted me to let me know.

Obviously being curious about what had gone on, I started doing some research. I quickly found an article published in The Coast, a weekly free publication in Halifax. The twice updated article can be seen here.

This wasn't the original article published. The original article involved nothing but quotes from the Halifax store's previous owners, making very large claims about the company. One quote reads:

“We were forced to close due to a lack of support by the brand,” says Alan Garner, who managed first Atlantic Canadian location of the Canadian franchise alongside his wife Jody. “We brought the brand national and they, for the most part, left us alone.”

As a former journalism student, I was shocked that an article would be published without even attempting to contact head office, the opposing side. At no point in the article did it say "The WORKS was contacted for comment."

The WORKS head office replied by sending The Coast a press release explaining their side of the story. The Coast published part of the release in their updated version of the article. The WORKS promised that they would re-open the store and were not aware of the closing until it was released publicly. There is no way of knowing which side is telling the truth, but one thing I do know is the WORKS followed through with their promise, and FAST.

By Sunday evening, the WORKS Facebook page posted a picture of the store in Halifax with the caption "The WORKS Halifax is back and open for business. So proud of our hard working crew."

You can say I'm biased, but as someone who will have to deal with crises like this one in the future, I am very impressed with the way this was handled. Way to go!
